Deerhoof’s La Isla Bonita highlight “Exit Only” has gotten a massive remix from Perfect Pussy. The first half follows the structure of the original song for the most part, but it sounds as though it was recorded from the dark depths of hell: everything’s heavier and moves sluggishly, though the hook of the song is kept intact. Around the 4-minute mark (or about where the traditional song ends), Perfect Pussy’s influence really breaks through. They create a haunting and dimly chaotic noise collage that’s reminiscent of what Say Yes To Love devolved into towards the end. Textured noise and breathy lyrics sound like they’re struggling to transmit from some radio that was the only thing left on the earth after something wiped all of humanity out. You try to catch onto every unintelligible word to make sense of the noise but it’s impossible — everything’s stretched out and buried far underneath. It’s pretty fantastic. The remix is accompanied by grainy black-and-white visuals from Mark Kent that explore a geometric, off-kilter wasteland that’s completely sterile but oddly inviting. Listen below.
