Swedish musician Johan Agebjörn is best known for writing and producing many of Sally Shapiro’s best known works, but he keeps up a healthy solo release schedule too. Agebjörn’s upcoming album Notes marks a change from his previous ambient and nu-disco sounds; his starting point for each song on the project was the Casio MT­52, “a cheap keyboard from the early 80s that was mostly used on an amateur level.” On “The Boy Who Thought It Was A Good Idea To Cry,” the instrument conjures a mysterious wintry instrumental that splits the difference between nocturnal Christmas music and something you might hear in the background of a suspenseful TV series. Shapiro’s sighing coos add a lot to the mix, but the twinkling keyboard sounds have the spotlight here. Listen below.
