Trust Fund – “Essay To Write”
Trust Fund’s first single from No One’s Coming For Us, “Cut Me Out,” shifted from effortlessly pretty indie-pop chirping to a crushing distorted chorus. “Essay To Write,” the Bristol band’s latest, pulls off the opposite trick: It starts out with that same beautifully ramshackle guitar jangle then pulls the bottom out, leaving only the charmingly unkempt vocal harmonies and the most minimal trace of instrumentation before surging back to full strength for the big finish. Lyrically, Ellis Jones spins a story of undergraduate romance — “After your exams we’ll have so many weeks/ We can sleep outside for however long you need” — but his paramour doesn’t think it’s all so simple. No One’s Coming For Us cracked our list of the year’s most anticipated LPs, and this is amping up my anticipation even more. Have a listen.
