Long before Sam Smith became the kind of Grammy favorite that counts even my mother as a fan, he got his big break singing Disclosure’s magnificent pop/house hybrid “Latch.” Later, Smith recorded his own version of the song that’s more in line with his sentimental balladeer persona. That’s the “Latch” that Smith brought to Austin City Limits, one marked by gorgeous violin melodies against plaintive piano chords. It’s a reminder that regardless of the arrangement, this is a monster of a song and a fine showcase for Smith’s exquisite vocal talents. Watch below.
