Stream A MIDI Version Of I Love You, Honeybear On Father John Misty’s New Digital Music Service
Josh Tillman, the former Fleet Foxes drummer who reinvented himself as the ’70s boho lounge-lizard singer-songwriter, appears to be no fan of the whole stream-an-album-the-week-before-it’s-out internet-marketing plan. Next month, Tillman will release I Love You, Honeybear, the second Father John Misty album, and we’ve already heard the early songs “Bored In The USA” and “Chateau Lobby #4 (In C For Two Virgins).” Those might be the only songs we get to hear before the album’s out, though. Rather than streaming the whole LP, Tillman has launched a website dedicated to mocking the idea of streaming a whole album before it’s out. As a devastating sneer in the direction of tech startups, Misty has given us SAP, “a new signal-to-audio process by which popular albums are ‘sapped’ of their performances, original vocal, atmosphere and other distracting affectations so the consumer can decide quickly and efficiently whether they like a musical composition, based strictly on its formal attributes, enough to spend money on it.” To that end, he’s posted an awful-sounding MIDI stream of every song on I Love You, Honeybear. As an album stream, it sounds like total dogshit. As a big, meta joke, it’s going to be tough to beat. Check out the whole thing here.
UPDATE: Now you can download the SAP version of the album.
