Princess – “Black Window” (Stereogum Premiere)
Our first encounter with Princess was “Molly,” an earthy dream-pop tune that pegged the Dublin duo as promising and unique. “Black Window,” their latest, also suggests their sound is difficult to pin down. The song morphs several times, sliding from shimmering Sonic Youth-style guitar parts to spiky early aughts post-punk to something resembling motorik twee chamber-pop. The vocal interplay at the end is especially hypnotic, like an arrangement from an old Sufjan Stevens folk tune crossed with ’90s indie rock at its most metropolitan. It’s a fascinating piece of work, and you should follow it to the finish below.
