Last year, an anonymous internet commenter accused Conor Oberst of a long-ago rape. Oberst filed a libel lawsuit, and the accuser eventually apologized and admitted that the story wasn’t true. Oberst dropped the lawsuit. But to hear Oberst tell it, the episode still haunts him. Oberst is the latest guest on WTF, the comedian Marc Maron’s podcast. Most of their conversation is about music, as it should be. It touches on things like Oberst’s beginnings, his songwriting style, and his influences, and it includes a quick acoustic performance. But the interview does touch on the rape accusation, and Oberst still sounds a little shell-shocked when he talks about the way the story spread on the internet: “It’s basically a game of telephone that goes on.” He said that he’s “trying to put it in the rearview mirror,” and when Maron asks if he’s written any lyrics about it, Oberst says, “I think I’m still processing it.” Listen to the interview here.
