I think I started the whole category of reading things on the internet instead of doing my job, way back in ’98. You guys can try, if you like. But I started it.

[Ed. Note: Huckabeast’s comment is from last Friday, which seems a little odd, but comments from Friday are actually not taken into account for that Friday’s Monsters’ Ball, rather they’re taken into account for the follow Friday’s Monsters’ Ball, so it’s actually not that odd at all! Okay?! CONGRATS GUYS! Thank you for hanging out with me here and making jokes, you’re all very good at it.]

I don’t have a caption for this because I keep thinking about the name, Anderson “Pooper Scooper” Cooper.

My wife used to work for Raytheon, which is a major contractor for the Antarctica base, and a number of her friends have spent the winter in Antarctica.
She was taken completely out of the movie by the dogs. “They don’t have dogs in Antarctica!” she protested. It was really tough for her to get back into the movie. |

Ah, but in the ’80s there were still dogs in Antarctica. They were kind of an anachronism by then, though – more like pets than practical transportation – and basically just kept around for reasons of historical inertia and cuteness.
Most accounts of the Scott v. Admunsen race to the South Pole emphasize their different attitudes toward dogs (Scott: weak sled pullers but good companions; Admunsen: good sled pullers and good eatin’) as one of the main reasons Admunsen won, so dogs had a special place in Antarctica partly because of that. And even though Scott lost and died in the ice, his expedition was all worth it to produce what must be the best sled dog photo of all time:
