The 2013 Academy Awards Nominees

The 2013 Academy Awards Nominees

The 2013 Academy Awards Nominees were announced this morning! As you may remember, there have been a few problems with the Academy Awards online voting system this year (“I’m typing in my password and it just isn’t working! Is it one word or two? I’m typing it into my online mail system, and then do I hit send or…Wait, what? The subject line. Wait. WHAT? What web address? Where do I type the web address, into the subject line? YOU AREN’T BEING VERY CLEAR.”) This caused low voter turnout, and a few suspected that it would lead to more unconventional nominees since only the reckless youngs could figure out how to even do the damn thing. I’m not sure if that happened? To me, almost everything looks like exactly what anyone would have expected. Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Silver Linings Playbook have a lot of nominations. Life of Pi, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Django Unchained are all nominated for best picture, which may be less conventional, (not even really, though), but also it might help to remember that last year The Help and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close were both nominated for best picture because ten movies can be nominated now and you have to fill up that list somehow. (Not that all of the movies I listed are anything close to The Help and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but I think you understand my meaning.) (That lots of movies are going to be in there, even ones you might not expect.) Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for best actress, FINALLY. Quvenzhané Wallis, of Beasts of the Southern Wild, is also nominated for best actress, which is great. (All of the Beasts of the Southern Wild nominations are surprising, actually.) (Benh Zeitlin is up for Best Director!) Joaquin Phoenix is nominated for best actor, even though he hates the Oscars and doesn’t want any of them. All the “Best Animated Feature Film” nominees are understandable enough. I don’t know! What do you guys think? Seems like a pretty straight-forward Academy Awards nominee list to me, except for how Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, and Tom Hooper weren’t nominated for Best Director. I’m not mad, though. It’s just an awards show that none of us are nominated in but that we will STILL have to sit through, so, you know. Whatever. R U mad? Happy? Not enough Django nominations? Take a look at the list and let me know.
