What's the deal with how Saturday Night Live was on hiatus for a while but then it came back for a weekend when there were a bunch of holidays? What's up, guys? Somebody forget to check a calendar? Wazzaaaap? Its returning episode, hosted by Sofia Vergara, was goodish! The "Mitt Romney pretending to care about things" cold open, in true cold open fashion, was enjoyable for the first minute or so and then, after its 46th minute or so, made me yell "ENOUGH" out loud at the screen. Sofia's monologue was not great, focusing on how she has boobs and an accent, which, of course, but also: ENOUGH! AGAIN! Will Sofia Vergara's career ever progress past the fact that she has boobs and an accent? Does she even want it to? The world waits to see, wide-eyed in curious anticipation, just kidding. I hope so! But I think the answer to both is "probably not"? Not that she doesn't seem lovely! The rest of the episode vacillated between pretty good (which we will discuss after the jump) and not so good, but one thing I wanted to point out specifically was the "just friends" sketch. WHAT? WAS THE DEAL? WITH THAT SKETCH? Did they find that premise in a folder marked "'90s light homophobia" in a cabinet at MAD TV HEADQUARTERS? My goodness. Terrible! Let's talk about the stuff that wasn't terrible!
Hahaha, well, first we obviously need to talk about GILLY. The character "Gilly" was said to have been retired, but I assume that because Kristen Wiig is going to be leaving at the end of this season (probably) they decided to bring her out of the vault. GREAT! I know everybody hates Gilly, but hey everybody guess what, I LOVE GILLY. Gilly's the best. "What." "I love Gilly. What." Get it? Gilly. This sketch was particularly terrible, though. Not even in an endearing way. Which was too bad. The Will Forte character is very necessary. Oh well. Goodnight, Gilly. Everyone hated you, but I loved you, except for in this sketch because it was very bad.
I think this was either the second or third installment of "Bein' Quirky" and it was great again, only because Terran Killem's Michael Cera impression is perfect and I love it a lot. Sofia Vergara's The Nanny impression also made me laugh. Good jobs!
The "Almost Pizza" commercial was really great. Certainly the best part of the episode, and probably one of my favorite things SNL has done all season.
The "Watch What Happens Live" sketch was kind of odd to me, just because I don't really think that enough people watch that show to warrant an entire sketch being dedicated to mocking it? That seems a little weird. I did watch that show one time, though, and I have to say that this sketch did a very good job.
And, finally, I wanted to highlight "Drunk Uncle." The first "Drunk Uncle" Weekend Update segment was really great, and this one was kind of great too, but really it was just kind of the same jokes from the first one with different words put in? "Netflix me, Netflix me, Netflix me," for instance. They can do better with this character! It's a great character!
One Direction was the musical guest, and I guess those boys are famous? Like, REALLY famous? Justin Bieber-level famous? That is crazy. Is this what it was like for adults when the Backstreet Boys were famous? They just had no idea who they were? And then they were on SNL and the adults were like, "I guess these guys are famous"? And the children were like "OHMYGODOFCOURSETHEY'REFAMOUSAREYOUKIDDINGTHEY'RETHEBACKSTREETBOYSOHMYGOD ahhhhh YOUARESOSTUPIDAJ'SMYFAVORITE." Which One Direction boy was your favorite? Mine was the one in the bowtie. Was that everyone's favorite?
