Last week, the episode opened with the cast complaining about mice in the loft, and this week it opens with the cast complaining about trash and dirty dishes in the loft. Really? Is this what America needs to open its eyes to? The social experiment of what really happens when a bunch of averagely lazy children are picked to live in a loft and not have anyone around to clean up after them? A show about chores?
As someone in his mid-to-late 40s, I recognize that I'm not the target audience for this show, but if this is really what the show is going to be about then the question remains: WHO IS? Do college kids really care about other college kids who have messy apartments? Do high school kids look up to college kids who have messy apartments? Does anyone care about messy apartments? I have seen some boring television in my time, but an hour dedicated to people fighting about cleaning up after themselves? SHOOT YOUR TELEVISION.
And that's seriously it. The highlight of the show was a quick TWSS moment at a grocery store. You know, for the Archives:
Ryan and Chet were invited to the grocery store to help with the taping of a webisode? That's a thing that happens. "Hey, you two regular guys, come to the grocery store and stand around in the background while we tape a webisode about carving a turkey. You know, grocery store stuff." The best part is that it inspires Ryan to go to film school. Perfect. If you get inspired to go to film school because you made That's What She Said jokes in the background of a webisode taping at a Red Hook grocery store, you are going to be the best filmmaker. LOLsterpiece. Ryan drinks your milkshake. I do love that guy at the end whose critique of the film is that none of it is over- or under-exposed. Good critique. Very critical. Then he turns to his girlfriend, like, "Babe, you hear me give that critique? How does it feel to be dating a fucking genius?" That guy is the best. I heard he got hired to direct the big screen adaptation of Tool Academy.
Otherwise that's it, though. It's an episode about chores. At one point JD screams and smashes a glass coffee table, which is very dramatic, sure, and it's a clip they used in the "This season on the Real World" bumper at the end of the first episode, but he still screamed and smashed a glass coffee table because of CHORES, so it's like, whatever. Now you have a new chore, cleaning up that fucking coffee table. Lame.
