Sam Cohen – “Pretty Lights”
The Yellowbirds are officially no longer, but you can rest assured that Sam Cohen will continue pumping out supremely beautiful psychedelic folk-rock just the same. Not too long ago he buttered us up with “Kepler 62” from his upcoming solo album, Cool It. Now he’s launched the spacecraft on “Pretty Lights,” a sprawling suite that morphs and shifts like a Grateful Dead song, unfolding over three beautifully synth-drenched movements. The first half is gorgeous and lilting, then the drums pick up midway before the whole thing dissolves over an interstellar synth bass. Just when you think it’s over, Cohen closes out with a distorted space chant that could almost pass for prog-rock. It’s quite a ride. Listen below.
Cool It is out 4/28 on Easy Sound.
