Mac McCaughan – “Lost Again” (Stereogum Premiere)
Mac McCaughan has been making heartfelt and catchy-as-hell music — both with his long-running band Superchunk and his more-or-less-solo side project Portastatic — for decades. But he’s waited until now to release an album under his own name. This spring, McCaughan will release his official solo debut Non-Believers, an album that dwells on teenage feelings and on the moment that punk rock turned introspective. “Lost Again,” the first song we’ve heard from the album, is a warm and bittersweet and gorgeous tune about feeling untethered, and it sets McCaughan’s distinctive honk against some beautifully layered guitars, a murmuring keyboard, and a spare drum-machine beat. Like so many of McCaughan’s songs, it feels instantly familiar, like something you’ve been happy to have in your life for years. Listen to it below.
Non-Believers is out 5/5 on Merge. The “Box Batteries” b/w “Whatever Light” single is coming 4/7.
