Hear Tobias Jesso Jr. Cover Big Star, Debut “Bad Words” On Zane Lowe’s BBC Show
Canada’s newest heartthrob Tobias Jesso Jr. quickly pricked up ears in the music industry with early mooning ballads like “True Love” and “Hollywood.” Since then, he’s announced his debut album Goon and spilled some of his incredible backstory to us. It wasn’t long until the BBC’s Zane Lowe invited the Vancouver musician to record a live session, and it’s available for listening now. Jesso played “How Could You Babe,” debuted the self-blaming breakup ballad “Bad Words,” and finished with a cover of Big Star’s “Thirteen,” a song that will remind you of the crushing, tumultuous way teenage love sweeps over you. (My Stereogum colleague Chris DeVille mentioned that Jesso covering “Thirteen” makes perfect sense because “The Wait” — one of the as-yet-unreleased tracks on Goon — is a spiritual sequel of sorts.) Listen to the full session below; it also features some excellent honky-tonking.
Goon is out 3/17 on True Panther. Pre-order it here.
