Vetiver – “Loose Ends” (Stereogum Premiere)
Vetiver have been around for what feels like forever in today’s fast-paced indie world, putting out solid LP after solid LP of easygoing folk-rock since the halcyon days of so-called “freak folk.” But despite this longevity, they’ve never really dominated the conversation or the spotlight, perhaps by design — Andy Cabic seems like the kind of guy who’s pretty content to just keep on doing his thing while slowly expanding his sonic palette, and the best Vetiver songs gradually draw you into their world more than they hit you over the head and demand your attention. Not paying attention, though, would be a mistake. Last month, Vetiver returned for the first time since 2011, steering further into the direction of soft-rock with the breezy, surprisingly tropical “Current Carry,” the first song off of their upcoming Complete Strangers LP. Second single “Loose Ends” rocks a bit harder, disguising Cabic’s wistful lyrics under a coat of winning, golden-hued jangle-pop. It’s an appealing formula, and you can hear it below.
