George FitzGerald – “Full Circle” (Feat. Boxed In)
George FitzGerald has already made a name for himself as a DJ, producer and label head (he helms ManMakeMusic) but he’s finally releasing his own debut album of this spring. It’s called Fading Love, and you can slot it right next to the kind of cerebral, intimate electronic music of Caribou and Jon Hopkins. Although he was born in Britain, FitzGerald lives and works mostly out of Berlin now, and that’s where the inspiration for lead single “Full Circle” struck him:
A cherished, old newspaper clipping of footballer Eric Cantona with the headline ‘Cantona Comes Full Circle’, which adorned the wall, providing the unexpected flash of inspiration for a song about the unfulfilled promise of stagnant relationships.
Even in the age of computer screens and iPhones, I love that a newspaper clipping inspired this bit of minimalistic house. Boxed In’s Oli Bayston vocalizes the plot for yet another doomed love story: “You’re always starting the fights / Endless days, endless nights.” Been there. But the song’s melancholy longing barely needs Bayston to spell it out for us. This is sleepy-eyed romantic doomsday music at its finest, when the anger fades and you’re left with the heavy, peaceful resignation of loneliness. Listen below.
