Meet The Man Who’ll Play Rivers Cuomo In The Rivers Cuomo Sitcom
Last year, we learned that Fox was putting together Detour, a sitcom based on the life story of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. In the mid-’90s, when Weezer first went on hiatus, Cuomo left his band to attend Harvard University, and the show will take that loose premise and run with it. And now we know who will portray the sitcom version of Cuomo: Ben Aldridge, a British actor who’s previously starred in the BBC drama Our Girl and in a stage-musical version of American Psycho. That’s him up there. Handsome, right? He doesn’t really look anything like Cuomo. But I guess anyone can sort of look like Cuomo if you put them in thick enough glasses!
Deadline reports that Aldridge will play the Cuomo-esque character and that the much-younger Joey Morgan will play his much-younger roommate. Psych creator Steve Franks is writing it, and The Wedding Ringer auteur Jeremy Garelick will direct. Cuomo himself will serve as a producer. It might make it to the air, and it might not, but this honestly does sound like a really good idea for a sitcom.
UPDATE: Peter Gallagher (Togetherness, Covert Affairs) has been cast in the supporting role of Professor Zaring, and Olivia Thirlby (Juno, The Wedding Ringer) will play Gabrielle, his teaching assistant.
