Skepta – “Shutdown”
The London rapper Skepta has been making grime music since 2005, when that subgenre was still in full flower, and he’s been at the heart of its recent revival. His singles “It Ain’t Safe” and “That’s Not Me” are reportedly huge anthems in the UK, and he was a guest at Kanye West’s surprise show in London earlier this week. Skepta’s latest offering is “Shutdown,” an absolute monster banger. “Shutdown” opens and closes with samples of Drake speaking in fake patois, and in between, it’s nothing but breathless fast-rapping over a beat that sounds like spaceship doors slamming. Listen to it below.
I am so ready for a grime revival, dude. You don’t even know.
