Active Child – “1999”
The last time Pat Grossi put out a full album — 2011 — electronic-tinged alt-R&B wasn’t the pervasive force it is in 2015. The landscape has changed, and imitators of the form that Active Child helped initiate abound. It’s to the point where I almost forgot that this combination of porcelain falsetto, slow grooves, and electronic production can sound as good as “1999” does. It’s delicate and strong, brimming with emotion but not top-heavy. The song floats like a swan on a lake, disturbing no one but leaving the surface noticeably stirred in its wake. There are also harps, elevating this from a romantic song to a love hymnal. Listen below.
Mercy is out in June via Vagrant.
