Thin Lips – “Nothing Weird” (Stereogum Premiere)
“Nothing Weird” initiates with an anxious torrent of situational descriptions, visible conversational pauses that indicate some kind of internal conflict. Allusions to nail biting, tongue biting, and nervous glances surface before Chrissy Tashjian sings, “You’re leaving today/ But I’m staying put/ I’d follow you there/ But I would just shadow you into a rut.” This isn’t a song about someone leaving, it’s a song about getting left behind. Tashjian narrates the awkward preliminary steps to saying a definitive farewell to someone who she wishes wouldn’t leave, all the while trying to reassure herself that she’s “better alone” when she probably isn’t. Thin Lips will release their sophomore EP Divorce Year on Seagreen Records in May to coincide with their tour alongside fellow Philadelphians, Hop Along. Listen to the cassette’s debut single below.
