The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
The best music-related video this week may have been something that didn’t have any music. I’m talking about Hannibal Buress consuming Justin Bieber’s soul. There are days when I want to turn this entire column into a tribute to Buress, who is not a musician in any way. (Proof.) Nevertheless, there were a bunch of good music videos this week, and there was one great one. Check out our picks below.
5. TOPS – “Driverless Passenger” (Dir. Jason Harvey)
There aren’t too many videos where, when you’re watching, you genuinely have no idea what’s going to happen next. This is one of those.
4. Brandon Flowers – “Can’t Deny My Love” (Dir. Robert Schober)
I don’t know why Flowers insists on setting so many of his videos in the Old West (or maybe Old Massachusetts in this case), but I’m not going to deny a prime slice of ’80s spooktacular silliness like this.
3. Jamie xx – “Loud Places” (Feat. Romy Madley Croft) (Dir. Simon Halsall & Jean-Baptiste Fugger)
London is a very pretty city, and did you know the xx could gleam cubes like that? I sure didn’t.
2. Sia – “Big Girls Cry” (Dir. Sia & Daniel Askill)
Is anyone else worried about this kid? I’m starting to worry about this kid.
1. Kendrick Lamar – “King Kunta” (Dir. Director X)
I might have to write a whole Week In Rap column about this one video, so I don’t want to go on too long about it here. But what a great display of an embattled local culture. (As I understand it, that swap meet where Kendrick raps on the roof is about to become a Wal-Mart.) And more than any of the actual songs that Kendrick has done with Dr. Dre, what a great Dr. Dre tribute. I wish I understood why the aspect ration makes it look like someone was holding an iPhone vertically, though.
