For me, it’s the language around how they presented it, particularly when positioning this as the streaming solution that is _finally_ beneficial to the artist all without ever mentioning just, you know, _how_ it was going to be that. Couple that with no free option, which seems impressively short-sighted, the whole thing just felt like a lot of successful musicians (many of them good! but still) congratulated themselves for being friends with one another and spending money on a purchasing a business.

Take that self importance and throw in an obnoxious viral campaign that co-opts the norms of political and social support movements on social media (again, for a business) and baby, you got a backlash going.
