Van Halen just released Tokyo Dome Live In Concert, a double album culled from their 2013 performance at the titular Japanese venue. It’s the band’s first live album with David Lee Roth, which seems as crazy as the fact that last week’s Kimmel two-night stand was their first American TV appearance with Roth. Those Kimmel performances were pretty, pretty rough, and so is Roth’s vocal performance on the album. So it’s unsurprising that Sammy Hagar, the singer who replaced Roth in 1985 before experiencing his own fallout with the band 11 years later, couldn’t help but talk some shit about it. A writer from The Las Vegas Review-Journal caught Hagar on the phone this week and it didn’t take long before the Red Rocker shared some disparaging remarks about his old band:

I’m trying to tread lightly on the whole thing. Every time they do something, I’m like, “Oh my god, can these guys do anything worse to their reputation and to the level of the music of the band?”

Hagar added, “They’ve got some pretty rough vocals,” then kept going:

I try to stay away from criticism, but here I am, already starting this interview with it. It’s impossible, Doug. It’s impossible to stay away from. Standing back, I’m just going, “What the (expletive) are these guys thinking?”

Gotta go with Hagar on this one. It’s been all downhill ever since they kicked out Michael Anthony. Even the Gary Cherone era seems respectable compared to this! Let’s flash back to better times…
