The Special Without Brett Davis is a weekly sketch-comedy show that airs on Manhattan’s MNN public-access network and hosts an array of oddball comedians in addition to musical acts. Brett Davis took over The Special when Chris Gethard graduated to cable a few months ago, and for those of you unfamiliar with Gethard, he appears as Ilana’s neurotic pushover boss on the always excellent Comedy Central series Broad City. Musical guests who have appeared on Davis’ show include Washer, White Rope, Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav, and this week, Ava Luna dropped in to perform “Sears Roebuck M&Ms,” off last year’s Electric Balloon, and “Steve Polyester,” from their forthcoming album, Infinite House, which is due out next week. Ever absurd, this particular episode was Halloween-themed, with Davis playing the cartoonish blonde Dracula who introduces Ava Luna. Becca Kauffman leads the band on both songs, and if you look carefully, you’ll notice her playing a member of Tim Harrington’s cult in this older episode of The Special.
