Watch David Byrne & Some Color Guard Dancers Preview Their Upcoming Contemporary Color Event
David Byrne had this idea to combine live musicians with color guard, the weird military tradition of dancing with flags and guns. He’s calling it Contemporary Color, and a few performances this summer will feature Byrne along with people like St. Vincent, Kelis, Ad-Rock, Dev Hynes, and Nelly Furtado. Those people will all perform alongside teenage color-guard troupes from the U.S. and Canada. And in a new video, we see kids explaining what color guard is and why they’re so excited to be involved in this thing. It’s really cute! They’re all extremely stoked! We also get a quick glimpse of what it might look like, as one of the troupes dances to St. Vincent’s “Marrow.” Check it out below.
Byrne and friends will perform Contemporary Color 6/22-23 at the Air Canada Center in Toronto and 6/27-28 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
UPDATE: Here’s another video with Dev Hynes.
