This was a fucking fucked up week. I got more joy, and solace, from the videos of one nameless genius doing Michael Jackson dance moves through the streets of Baltimore, my embattled hometown, than I did out of any music video. And while it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with music, as of this morning, this video of Maryland State Attorney Marilyn Mosby announcing that she’d charge six officers with crimes in Freddie Gray’s death is now my new favorite video in forever. But there were some good music videos this week, too, and we’ve got five of them below.

5. Brandon Flowers – “Lonely Town” (Dir. Roboshobo)

You know it’s a good week for videos when the guy from the Killers remakes House Of The Devil as an ominous but dance-heavy short film and it only makes #5.

4. Alabama Shakes – “Sound & Color” (Dir. James Frost)

So many videos have that “to be continued…” tag. This is the rare one where I’d really like to see the sequel. The world demands to know what’s going on with the tragic astronaut, Alabama Shakes!

3. Death From Above 1979 – “Virgins” (Dir. Eva Michon)

It’s not easy to figure out new ways to show rock-video debauchery, but Michon figured out a crucial way to up the ante: Make everyone Amish! Extra points to DFA 1979 for actually looking like cops in their cameo.

2. Yukon Blonde – “Saturday Night” (Dir. Mac Boucher)

Two things I like to see in music videos: Weapons-grade freakiness and long, elaborate tracking shots. If you can find a way to get both of those in there, you’re a winner.

1. Toro Y Moi – “Lilly” (Dir. HARRYS)

Every Toro/HARRYS collaboration finds such a weird, quiet, understated swagger that the complete lack of narrative thread isn’t a problem at all. Chaz Bundick should never hire anyone else to make his videos. These guys just get each other.
