Vince Staples – “Señorita”

Vince Staples – “Señorita”

One of last year’s best rap albums wasn’t an album at all; it was Hell Can Wait, an EP from the Long Beach rapper Vince Staples that lasted seven songs and 24 minutes. In that brief window of time, Staples perfected an icy, minimal, intense, politically charged, emotionally seething form of rap — something as personal as it was hard. “Señorita,” the new track from Staples, follows another blueprint. It’s more the sort of thing you’d expect to hear from an up-and-coming rapper right now: Fast-rap about success and shootings over moody pianos and excitable hi-hats, with a hook that could’ve come from Rich Homie Quan. (UPDATE: It’s a Future sample.) But it’s all done to perfection, with a chilly edge, and it’s another sign that Staples is one of our most exciting young rappers. Listen to the track below.
