Cult Leader – “You Are Not My Blood” (Mark Kozelek & Desertshore Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)
Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters mastermind Mark Kozelek makes gentle, delicate, sensitive music that has perhaps counterintuitively found a devoted fanbase among metalheads. As I mentioned in an essay I wrote last year, my own obsession with Kozelek’s music came after hearing Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele (RIP) wax enthusiastic about Red House Painters. Godflesh/Jesu leader Justin Broadrick is such a fan that he’s making a record with Kozelek. Now, two Salt Lake City metal bands — Cult Leader and SubRosa (well, SubRosa members Kim Pack and Sarah Pendleton) — have teamed up to cover a Kozelek song, “You Are Not My Blood,” which was recorded by Koz with his side band Desertshore.
Cult Leader are the group that formed out of the ashes of math/grind/sludge pugilists Gaza; they released their debut LP, Nothing For Us Here, last year. SubRosa are a magnificent funeral doom band whose last LP, More Constant Than The Gods, was one of 2013’s best records. “You Are Not My Blood” is featured on Cult Leader’s upcoming three-song EP, Useless Animal, but it’s an anomaly: It sounds almost nothing like the spastic, pealing assault we’ve come to expect from Cult Leader and/or Gaza. It’s a dirge-y, doom-y thing that pretty seamlessly combines both Cult Leader and SubRosa’s sounds, actually — and pays fitting homage to Kozelek’s sound, too. Listen.
