The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

straight2video

This is how good of a week this was for music videos: Michel Gondry, to my mind the greatest music video director of all time, barely ever makes videos anymore, but he made one this week for the Chemical Brothers' "Go." It's got that sense of dreamy inventiveness, and weird detail-minded design, that some of Gondry's best work has, and it makes a not-that-great song sound a whole lot better. It's what you want from a Michel Gondry video. But it didn't make this week's list. There were five videos that I thought were better. Most of them came from artists I've barely, if ever, heard of. They're all below.

5. Emilie Nicolas - "Pstereo" (Dir. Emile Rafael)

Whales!

4. Fur Voice - "Fantasía" (Dir. Pablo Maestres)

The best Michel Gondry video of the week wasn't the one Gondry actually directed.

3. San Cisco - "Magic" (Dir. Zack Spiger)

I would absolutely watch a TV show about lovelorn vampire Riff Raff.

2. Anneli Drecker - "Alone" (Dir. Thor Brenne)

A beautiful little short film about trust.

1. Twin Shadow - "I'm Ready" (Dir. Lance Drake)

In which Lance Drake uses early-'90s VH1-video aesthetics to make George Lewis Jr. look like a fucking superhero. Just masterful.
