Watch A Trailer For The Live-Action Jem And The Holograms Video
If you’re a person of a certain age, your ideas about pop stardom were probably shaped by the ’80s cartoon Jem And The Holograms, in which an ordinary girl used a holographic computer to transform herself into the world’s greatest pop star. On the show, Jem maintained a secret identity and did battle with an evil girl band called the Misfits (yeah). It was absurd and hypnotic, and it was the only ostensibly-for-girls cartoon that it was socially acceptable for boys to watch during those much-more-gender-stratified times. (Fun fact: Luna bassist Britta Phillips played Jem’s singing voice when she was a teenager.) Like everything else from the ’80s, Jem And The Holograms is about to become a new movie. And judging by its trailer, the movie will ditch just about everything about the cartoon, including the secret identity and the Misfits. From the looks of things, it’ll be a much more standard pop-star-needs-to-find-herself movie. On the other hand: Glittery makeup! And keytaurs! Aubrey Peeples, the actress who plays Layla Grant on Nashville, will play Jem, and Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald will star. I will watch the shit out of this even though it will probably be pretty bad. Watch the trailer below.
The Jem And The Holograms movie is coming in December, via Universal.
