Watch Courtney Barnett’s Take Away Show
Courtney Barnett is a master of reordering the mundane into crucial turning points in a narrative, and no song exemplifies this better than “Depreston,” a single off of this year’s excellent Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit. Many of the songs on this album are kinda-sorta-sad, but they all ride on the same tongue-in-cheek humor that made Barnett famous when she released The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas back in 2014. “Depreston” is one of the most blatantly heartbreaking songs on the record, a tale of urban malaise told through Barnett’s charming and unique personal lens. Watching Barnett perform the song for a La Blogotheque Take Away Show in the romanticized, undeniably gorgeous city of Paris makes Preston sound that much farther away.
