Maja Francis dubs her sound “fantasy pop” on SoundCloud, and that’s a fitting title for the slow-burning, majestic striding of her debut single “Last Days Of Dancing.” Swedish pop singers with unusual names (it’s pronounced Maya) keep cropping up — in fact, Francis is signed to the same label conglomerate as Seinabo Sey (Sweden Music/Universal Sweden). The two occupy similar spaces in the Scandipop landscape by combining forceful lyrical barbs with the genre’s infectious soaring synths. Technically, this is a song about the imminent future, one where Francis will forsake the dance floors where a song like this would soundtrack every late night. As long as she’s quitting dancing in order to give us more stellar tracks like this one, I’m in favor of the change. Listen.
