The 5 Best Videos of the Week
Same sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states! That’s a much, much bigger deal than anything music is going to give us anytime soon, and it feels weird to be writing about anything else right now. But it’s Friday, and perhaps you’d like to celebrate by watching some really good music videos. There were a lot of those this week, and five of them are below.
5. On An On – “It’s Not Over” (Dir. Carlos Lopez Estrada)
The cliched couple-parting movie scene becomes a surreal video game, and it all ends with a really great video punchline. This is one of those rare times when willfully bad CGI works better than anything halfway believable.
4. Tanlines – “Palace” (Dir. Alex Karpovsky & Teddy Blanks)
I feel like I’m learning things about the internal dynamics of Tanlines, especially during that bedroom scene, that I wasn’t really meant to find out.
3. Big Sean – “I Know” (Feat. Jhené Aiko) (Dir. Lawrence Lamont)
Big Sean released an excessive three videos this week, but the only one that deserves a spot here is the one that proves that he is going to be an incredibly charming old man one day. In fact, he’s basically a charming old man already. That corniness is a big part of his appeal, and I can’t believe I’m just realizing that now.
2. Mastodon – “Asleep In The Deep” (Dir. Video Rahim, Shane Morton & Skinner)
Can someone please tell me how to access this psycedelic puppet hellworld? My cat is kind of an asshole, and I think maybe I should send him there for a little while. Might build character.
1. Future Islands – “A Song For Our Grandfathers” (Dir. Jay Buim)
Warm, simple, human joy and familial love are hard concepts to communicate through the medium of music video. And yet here we are.
