ON AN ON – “Icon Love”
ON AN ON are one of those bands that exist because of another band’s failure — that’s my favorite kind. The group’s former band, Scattered Trees, had already booked studio time when they broke up, so Nate Eiesland, Ryne Estwing, and Alissa Ricci took the slot anyway, and went ahead and recorded ON AN ON’s debut album, Give In, two years ago. Now the Minneapolis synth-pop trio are following that up with this year’s poetically titled sophomore record And The Wave Has Two Sides. The two tracks released off the new record are wildly divergent; “It’s Not Over” is a slow-burning pop simmer about wanting to spill your heart on the dance floor, while “Drifting” is acoustic-heavy, and addresses a relationship’s inevitable dissolution. Both function as pulsing, sad-pop songs with the potential to dominate airwaves. Today they’ve released another new one, “Icon Love,” that sticks closer to the desperate, frustrated side of love. I was always caught up in their synths and harmonies before, but the bass line here completely steals the show. Listen.
Back when the band wrote this track, they were visibly stoked on it:
