“How does one transition to a mortal from a God?” wonders Sam Flynn Scott, frontman for The Phoenix Foundation, on their latest track “Give Up Your Dreams.” The Wellington, New Zealand six-piece hit that sweet spot between bubblegum psych-pop, prog-rock, and deeper, existential quandaries like the one quoted above. We premiered their single “Mountain,” along with the news of their new album Give Up Your Dreams, and that name isn’t a euphemism at all. On the title track, the band lay down a sardonic, shimmering song that encourages you to stop seeing the world as a sparkly, wonderful place. Thing is, the song itself is so buoyant that it contradicts their somewhat depressing message. As long as your dream doesn’t include a shift between mortality and immortality, perhaps it’s best not to heed their advice. After all, if they’d followed it, this song probably wouldn’t exist.
