Swirlies – “Trudy” (Stereogum Premiere)
No, “Trudy” is not a new Swirlies song, but it is a great Swirlies song, one that deserves to be passed around over 20 years after it was originally recorded. The Boston-based hybridized shoegaze band have been on tour celebrating their 25th anniversary and the re-release of their formative record Blondertongue Audiobaton, which dropped in 1993 and is considered by most to be a paramount example of ’90s underground rock. This track was recorded in the same year and was originally included on Simple Machine Records’ Working Holiday compilation series. This is the first time that “Trudy” has been released digitally, and it’s dropping in conjunction with Swirlies’ new 7″ Swirlies’ Magic Strop: Orca Vs. Dragon, which features three tracks recorded for UK radio sessions back in the day. This particular song was recorded on an 8-track in an MIT basement — it’s a tightly wound, near-perfect piece of clamorous pop. Listen and check out Swirlies’ remaining tour dates below.
