Phil Cook – “1922” (Charlie Parr Cover)
The Wisconsin-born and North Carolina-based Phil Cook has played in Megafaun and Justin Vernon’s DeYarmond Edison, and he’s also worked with the Blind Boys of Alabama, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Matthew E. White. Now he’s recruited a number of past friends and collaborators for his debut solo LP of ebullient, expansively layered folk-rock, Southland Mission. We’ve already heard its first single, “Great Tide,” and now he’s shared another track, a cover of a song by bluesman and longtime friend Charlie Parr. “When I hear Charlie Parr sing his ‘1922 Blues’ it feels like the gathering headwaters of the Mississippi River charging their way to New Orleans,” Cook says. “When I sing ‘1922,’ it only seems fair to make it sound the way Charlie’s version makes me feel; destined, invincible and free.” Invincible and free are definitely apt descriptors, and you can hear it below.
Southland Mission is out 9/11 via Thirty Tigers.
