Watch La Dispute Cover Toadies’ “Possum Kingdom”
Do you wanna die? La Dispute’s cover of Toadies’ alt-rock classic “Possum Kingdom” might make you feel that way. The A.V. Club’s A.V. Undercover series is a game of chance, after all. Instrumentally, it’s a perfectly respectable approximation of the gnarled chords, creeping bass, and stutter-stepping drums that have been such a sturdy foundation for the past 21 years. Jordan Dreyer, though, struggles to pull off Vaden Todd Lewis’ commanding vocals, draining them of their melodic power and sounding way out of his element. He pulls it together at the end, but still. Blame it on years of fronting a throat-shredding post-hardcore band, I guess. Watch below and judge for yourself.
Side note: Have you ever read what “Possum Kingdom” is about? That’s some True Detective shit right there.
