Sean Nicholas Savage – “Suburban Nights” (Stereogum Premiere)
Montreal’s Sean Nicholas Savage is releasing a new album, Other Death, this September on Arbutus. His ’80s New Wave style brings a chill atmosphere with upbeat synths and soft, whispered vocals. “Suburban Nights” slows things down compared to Savage’s usual synthpop; the song uses tenderly pressed piano keys and deep lingering bass with vocals sharing a despondent intimacy. Savage laments over the inevitable boredom found in suburbia: “Seems like everybody’s tired of the same old song/ Drinking on the job, working like a dog.” The slowness of the song mimics the lackluster life of the neighborhoods he’s describing. Listen.
