Skylar Spence – “Practice”
Allen Iverson’s “practice” rant is the stuff of legend. Long story short, when reporters asked the NBA star about his lack of attendance at practice, he responded… let’s say churlishly. Sample quote: “We’re sitting in here, and I’m supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we’re talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about practice. Not a game. Not, not … Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it’s my last. Not the game, but we’re talking about practice, man.” Actually, let’s just watch the thing.
Skylar Spence aka Ryan DeRobertis fka SAINT PEPSI is among the many admirers of this speech, so when he was asked to come up with a basketball-themed song for Carpark Records’ 16th-anniversary picture disc, he turned to Iverson for inspiration. “Practice” incorporates Iverson’s famous retorts into his signature disco-funk, and the results are as fun and fizzy as summertime. Listen below.
The basketball-themed picture disc is out 7/24 on Carpark. Pre-order it here.
