Matthew E. White – “Vision (No Skin Version)” (Stereogum Premiere)
Matthew E. White’s tender, sighing orchestral-soul missive Fresh Blood is one of 2015’s greatest underdogs. The record came out in March with spurts and starts of fanfare, but never really seemed to catch fire like a record of this magnitude deserves. Perhaps the new deluxe version, then, will be what sparks interest in White’s gentle, luxurious vision. Dubbed the No Skin version, this expanded album will be officially out this Friday in accordance with the new universal release date. It’s a complete, full-length minimalist mix of the album, with no strings, horns, or choir. You get the essence of White’s vision without all the extra frosting, which makes his impeccable songwriting come through even stronger in the starkness. Listen to the new version of “Vision” below.
Additionally, watch the video for “Vision” presented by Nowness and created by Clara Aranovich. It chronicles the lives of several different characters who are blind and find community together.
