Meg Myers is simply a badass. The Tennessee-born and Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter became a real buzz with her edgy and emotional pop lyrics rooted at a dark rock core, drawing comparisons to reigning alt-’90s queens Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple. This past year alone, she’s headlined shows and opened for an impressive lineup that includes the Pixies, Alt-J, and Royal Blood among others. Her notable provocative single “Desire” and electro influenced heartbreaker “Sorry” also peaked within the top 20 on alternative radio in the U.S and modern rock charts. Now Myers is set to release her debut album Sorry on 9/18 and gives us an early look with her excellent fresh track “Lemon Eyes.” Featuring heavy abrupt guitar riffs and pounding percussions, Myers puts her rock abilities in full force. Her pop influences continue to manifest in her melodies and a catchy electric guitar intro (reminiscent of ’80s rock ballad), but her sharp tongue also remains behind that sweet voice. Morissette influences have never echoed more clearly, as Myers croons and belts out, “I bet you wanna walk away/ Run away/ Look away/ Turn away,” to her bitter troubled lover dubbed as “lemon eyes.” She bares no heartache, demanding that the sappy act be put to rest. As Myers tells it, “‘Lemon Eyes’ is about reassuring someone who is feeling the sourness of jealousy that they are yours, and you are theirs.” Listen below.
