DeJ Loaf – “Hey There” (Feat. Future)
Since her tough-as-fuck breakout anthem “Try Me,” DeJ Loaf has been honing in on her softer, more romantic side. (Just check out that cover art above if you don’t believe me.) And what does romance require but a worthy partner? That helps explain her recent string of collaborators: Lil Wayne, Kevin Gates, Young Thug… the list goes on. It’s worth noting that her collaboration with Big Sean wasn’t romantic, for reasons that should be obvious to everyone.
Her latest collab is the best yet and enlists the supernatural Atalanta rap force of Future, who is currently orbiting around his first #1 debut given the critical and commercial success of his new album DS2. You’ve got to be careful when working with Future though, and he accidentally on purpose outshines DeJ on “Hey There.” She croons the casual hook effortlessly, but unlike anything off DS2, Future is back in love song mode here and his verses (and joyfully muttered ad-libs) are absolutely incredible. “Fuck the earth / It’s us against everybody,” he raps, and it’s the brightest sentiment we’ve heard from him in months. Listen.
