Husky – “Let It Happen” (Tame Impala Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)
Tame Impala’s new album Currents arrived with a hailstorm of critical affection. At this point, it’s almost unanimously acclaimed as one of the best albums of the year, buoyed in part by the endless fretting of its elusive, perfectionist mastermind, Kevin Parker.
But let’s not forget the whole project kicked off in early March with the freewheeling psych-meditation “Let It Happen.” Clocking in at almost eight minutes, this song is completely singular to 2015; pop, fuzz and psych boiled to a technicolor boil. It’s such an enticing track, actually, that Melbourne folk-rock duo Husky couldn’t resist stripping it for parts and rendering the zen-like lyrics in their sparest form. Husky is the project of Husky Gawenda and Gideon Preiss, who released their own new record this June, Ruckers Hill. They’ll be coming to the U.S. for two brief stops this August, one show in New York and one in Los Angeles. Listen to their bare bones cover of “Let It Happen” below and hear their album’s title track here.
