Half Moon Run – “Trust” (Stereogum Premiere)
Montreal’s Half Moon Run embody indie-rock’s poppy side with an upbeat vibe in the vein of Here We Go Magic or The Middle East. The band began as a trio but is now up to four guys: Devon Portielje, Conner Molander, Dylan Phillips, and Isaac Symonds. In 2012, after signing with Glassnote Records (home of Mumford & Sons, Chvrches, Phoenix, Childish Gambino, etc.), they put out their first album, Dark Eyes. You might have heard their single, “Full Circle,” in an Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag trailer back in 2013, or maybe you saw them open for Of Monsters And Men, Metric, Patrick Watson, City And Colour or Mumford & Sons.
The quartet is getting ready to release their sophomore album, Sun Leads Me On, this fall. “Trust” is a heartbroken single carrying the weight of regret and the confusion of memory. The track is a little more electronic than their previously folk-inspired music, with reverberating vocals and a slight psychedelic undertone by way of the rolling synth beats. The three voices harmonize in a way that melds perfectly with Portielje’s mellow tone. Listen and ruminate.
