Yung is a Danish post-punk quartet who gave us the willful, glorious kiss-off “Nobody Cares” earlier this year. That song was on their debut EP, Alter, which came out in March, and now they’re prepping the follow-up. With the perfectly bratty title These Thoughts Are Like Mandatory Chores, the six-track EP shows the band’s growth. Veering further into shoegaze and away from vicious, immediate punk, the lead single “Blue Uniforms” showcases the flexibility of lead singer/songwriter Mikkel Holm Silkjær’s style. Silkjær is just 21, and though his age probably plays into the band’s reckless, combustible energy, he’s also been at this for a decade already. Unlike “Nobody Cares,” or “Blanket,” “Blue Uniforms” buries most of the vocals, and even ditches traditional song structure toward the end; everything drops out but a pulsing, expansive guitar solo that spins out of itself, and off into the ether. Somehow, this song captures the energy of a live band improvising, like the whole thing was planned spontaneity. Listen.
