Stars – “A Simple Song” (Stereogum Premiere)
Emo Canadian synth-poppers Stars are following up last year’s LP No One Is Lost with an EP containing two unreleased songs from that album’s sessions along with a new cover of the Style Council’s “Long Hot Summer.” The Lost & Found EP will be out next week, and today we’re premiering leadoff track “A Simple Song.” It touches on the cruel passage of time and the limits of pop music’s redemptive capacity, and, like most Stars songs, it’s the perfect thing to soundtrack a good cry in a roller rink. “I believe in the verse and chorus/ I believe in the radio/ I know the tune but the signal’s fading/ You were here but you had to go,” Torquil Campbell sings, before the subdued melancholy bursts into full-on throbbing, neon-streaked sadness in Amy Millan’s chorus.
