together PANGEA – “Blue Mirror” (Stereogum Premiere)
A certain punk-rock hedonism defines skate-inspired LA bands such as FIDLAR and Wavves, an anarchic indulgence that characterizes both the lyrics and the heavy guitars. It’s all pubs and drugs and seeking solace through post-adolescent rebellion, a subject most everyone can relate to. Los Angeles trio together PANGEA are usually found within this wavelength, but their new single “Blue Mirror,” pulled from their upcoming Tommy Stinson-produced The Phage EP, showcases a more mellow and lo-fi side of the band, trading grunge riffs for ’80s new wave guitars and hollow vocals. It sounds like Johnny Marr reinventing the California skate-punk scene, and it’s the most polished together PANGEA have come. But don’t worry, the repeated shouts of “You planned it all, GODDAMMIT!” in the verses still hint at that beloved lawlessness. Listen below.
The Phage EP tracklist:
01 “Looked In Too”
02 “If You’re Scared”
03 “Blue Mirror”
04 “My Head Is On Too Tight”
05 “Awful”
06 “She’s A Queen”
