Freakwater’s brand of music sits comfortably between the edges of alternative and country, but their latest single “The Asp And The Albatross” leans heavily towards the latter. The track is taken from the skewed Kentucky roots rock band’s forthcoming album Scheherazade, their first since 2005’s Thinking Of You and their first for Bloodshot Records rather than longtime label home Thrill Jockey. It’s a formidable return from the Eleventh Dream Day and Califone affiliates, bathed in folkish guitars and light vocals to emanate a warm and homey sound.
