Deer Tick – “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” (The Pogues Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)
You don’t really need a reason to partake in spontaneous drinking parties (here’s a drink for getting that raise, here’s another for getting out of bed today…), but Bloodshot Records’ 21st birthday is an especially good reason to down that crate of Blue Moon. To celebrate the record label reaching legal drinking age, they have released a limited-edition set of six 7″ singles, all of which comprise celebratory drinking-related songs. The collection comes packaged in a custom six-pack carrying case and everything.
Today we’re premiering Deer Tick’s contribution, a cover of drinking-song all-stars the Pogues’ “If I Should Fall From Grace With God.” It’s a very merry cover indeed, its jubilant guitars and whistles combining into a cheerful celebration. The Providence root-rockers do what they do best with jiving harmonies and fast-paced choruses, all of which will sound even better with a shot — or two — of tequila in hand. Happy birthday, Bloodshot! Listen to the track below.
